Testing TDS cannot be done with standard colorimetric test strips; it requires a digital conductivity meter (TDS meter) that measures electrical conductivity in microsiemens and converts it to parts per million.

Because dissolved minerals and salts do not evaporate, reverse osmosis filtration or draining and refilling with fresh tap water is the only physical method to reduce TDS.
