Where collectors are mounted directly affects their thermal output. A true south-facing roof tilted at an angle equal to your local latitude minus 10 to 15 degrees captures maximum peak midday sun. If a southern roof is unavailable, a west-facing roof is the next best option because it absorbs intense afternoon sun when air temperatures are highest. East-facing roofs lose approximately 20 percent efficiency, while north-facing roofs should be avoided.
Hydraulic Flow and Rooftop Head Requirements
Solar collectors are designed for low-pressure, high-volume flow. Polypropylene panels require an optimal flow rate of 0.1 gallons per minute per square foot of panel. If water flows too slowly, panels overheat, reducing thermal heat transfer; if water flows too fast, backpressure rises unnecessarily.

Yes. The pump must be programmed to run at a higher RPM (typically 2,400 to 2,800 RPM) when the solar valve opens to push water up to the roof and satisfy the vacuum breaker valve, then can throttle down once prime is achieved.
Do solar pool panels heat water on cloudy days?
Solar panels collect diffuse ambient radiation on hazy or partly cloudy days, but their thermal output drops by 50 to 70 percent. A digital solar controller prevents water circulation to the roof if panels are cooler than pool water.
How do solar pool panels withstand winter freezing?
