In contrast, the surrounding 4-inch concrete deck slab rests on topsoil and shifts constantly with soil moisture changes and seasonal temperature swings.
When summer heat causes the concrete deck to expand, it pushes inward toward the pool. If the expansion joint is empty or packed with incompressible dirt and stones, the deck rams directly into the pool coping.
