To understand chlorine lock, you have to look at what happens at the molecular level. When chlorine is added to pool water, it forms two compounds: hypochlorous acid (HOCl) and hypochlorite ions (OCl-). Hypochlorous acid is the potent sanitizer that kills bacteria, viruses, and algae in seconds. Hypochlorite ions sanitize much more slowly.
Cyanuric acid binds to hypochlorous acid to protect it from sunlight, forming chlorinated isocyanurates. In a properly balanced pool with 30 to 50 ppm CYA, roughly 97 percent of the chlorine is bound to CYA at any given second, while about 1.5 to 3 percent remains free as active HOCl. As active HOCl is consumed by algae or bacteria, the CYA reservoir releases more bound chlorine to replace it instantly.
When CYA climbs to 100, 150, or 200 ppm, this equilibrium breaks down. Over 99.5 percent of the chlorine is held captive by stabilizer molecules. The concentration of active hypochlorous acid drops so low that bacteria and algae reproduce faster than the tiny residual can kill them. This state of severe sanitizer suppression is what the pool industry calls chlorine lock.
