T-Shaped Pool Volume Calculator

A T-shaped pool is a main rectangle with a cross section running through it. Measure both parts separately and add the areas before applying your depth.

T-Shaped pool with the measurements needed for a volume calculation

Calculate your t-shaped pool volume

1. Pick your pool shape

Two rectangular sections that cross to form a T.

2. Enter your measurements

Measure in feet or meters. You always get gallons and litres back.

3. Set your depth

Average depth = (shallow + deep) / 2.

How we calculated this

Shape: T-Shaped. Dimensions used: Main section length 30 ft, Main section width 15 ft, Cross section length 14 ft, Cross section width 8 ft. Depth: 3 ft shallow and 8 ft deep, averaged to 5.50 ft. Formula: Volume = (L1 x W1 + L2 x W2) x average depth. Conversion: cubic feet x 7.48 = US gallons, gallons x 3.785 = litres, cubic feet x 0.0283 = cubic metres.

How the t-shaped pool volume calculator works

Multiply length by width for the main run, do the same for the cross section, then add the two areas.

Multiply the total area by average water depth. The main run usually holds the deep end, so take your depth readings there.

The formula

Volume = (L1 x W1 + L2 x W2) x average depth

Measure: Length and width of both sections, average depth.

Worked example

A 30 by 15 foot main run is 450 square feet and a 14 by 8 foot cross section adds 112 square feet.

The 562 square foot total at 5 feet average depth is 2,810 cubic feet, about 21,021 gallons or 79,570 litres.

Tips before you measure

Measure the cross section only where it sticks out past the main rectangle, so the overlap is not counted twice.

T-shaped pools often have poor circulation in the arms. Check the turnover rate once you know the volume.

T-Shaped pool volume FAQs

How do I avoid double counting the middle?

Measure the main run in full, then measure only the parts of the cross section that extend past it.

Is a T-shape the same as an L-shape?

The maths is the same two rectangle method. The difference is where the second section joins.

Which section is deeper?

Usually the main run. Use its shallow and deep readings for the average depth.
