How the oval pool volume calculator works

The area of an ellipse is 3.1416 times half the length times half the width. Multiply that area by the average water depth and you have the cubic volume.

If your oval has a shallow and a deep end, switch the depth control to two depths and the calculator averages them for you.

The formula

Volume = 3.1416 x (length / 2) x (width / 2) x average depth

Worked example

A 24 by 12 foot oval has an area of 3.1416 x 12 x 6, which is 226.2 square feet.

At 4 feet deep that is 904.8 cubic feet, close to 6,769 gallons or 25,620 litres.

Tips before you measure

Measure the longest and widest points of the water, taken at right angles to each other.

Buttress-free oval frames can flex outward once full. Measure after the pool is filled for the truest figure.

Why is an oval smaller than a rectangle of the same size?

The curved ends cut off roughly 21 percent of the footprint, so the same length and width hold less water.

Can I use this for a stadium shaped pool?

Yes, and the answer is within a few percent. A true stadium shape with straight sides holds slightly more.
